Since X-Men: Apocalypse was released in the U.K. it had been hit by a storm of bad reviews. Scoring a disastrous 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is the second lowest rated X-Men film to date, just above X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which sits at 38%. You can probably blame the reviews for the movies 66% drop in ticket sales after two weeks in North America. But is the movie really that bad? I’m here to tell you that it really isn’t.
Is the movie better than X-Men: Days of Future Past? Not by a long shot. X-Men: First Class? No. It’s the poorest in a trilogy starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of Professor X and Magneto. But it’s not a bad movie. There’s actually nothing “bad” about this flick. Rather, it’s really entertaining to watch all the way threw, with no traces of boredom. Let’s look at the positives without spoiling anything:
THE ACTORS
Oscar Isaac owns the role of Apocalypse. In fact, the man owns every role from St. Joseph, to King John, to Poe Dameron. Next we have a new batch of actors playing younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler. They’re all good in this movie too.
THE QUICKSILVER SCENE
Quicksilver gets another awesome sequence in this movie that’s just as good, probably even better than the one in Days of Future Past. It took 30 days to shoot and was done with a camera that can film up to 3000 frames per second. It pretty much makes the movie.
WE’VE WAITED A WHILE FOR THIS
There’s a bunch of neat things in here that we fans have waited years to see in an X-Men movie. I won’t state what they are, but I can tell you that they won’t disappoint. And as for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine cameo, it’s brief, but it’s Wolverine in a way we haven’t seen him before.
POLSKA!
I’m Polish. A great deal of the Polish language is spoken in this movie since early on we find Magneto living a new life with a wife and child in Poland. Props to Irishman Michael Fassbender for doing such a great job at pronouncing all those tough Polish words. The last time I saw a famous actor speak Polish in a movie, it was Robert Pattinson in Water for Elephants, and that was tough to watch.
IN CONCLUSION
Overall, X-Men: Apocalypse is a movie worth seeing. It’s not until after the movie ends that you realize it was a bit underwhelming. Psylocke and Angel for example, don’t do all that much. The pacing isn’t the best. The movie starts out a bit slow and then drops an explosive ending. But it’s still a movie that stands out on it’s own and appropriately incorporates a Metallica song.
